Semaglutide is used for weight loss, to lower blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes, and to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events and chronic kidney disease in certain adult patients.
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 agonist that works by reducing appetite, delaying gastric emptying, increasing insulin release, and decreasing the amount of glucagon released.
Semaglutide is used for weight loss and weight maintenance in obese patients 12 years of age and older with obesity

The injection is given once a week under the skin of the stomach (abdomen), thigh, or upper arm using an autoinjector (pen)

This injection should be used in addition to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity

How does semaglutide work?

The mechanism of action of semaglutide involves mimicking a natural hormone in the body called GLP-1, which:

Stimulates insulin production from the pancreas
Reduces sugar production by the liver
Slows down digestion
Helps control appetite and food intake.

GLP-1 is a naturally occurring hormone that is released when we eat to help us regulate food intake. Semaglutide works by activating GLP-1 receptors, which reduces appetite, slows down how quickly the stomach empties and increases insulin production, so you feel fuller for longer and eat less, leading to weight loss, control of blood sugar levels and a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.
The way in which semaglutide works to reduce kidney-related risks is not fully understood.
Semaglutide belongs to a class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists.


Initiate Semaglutide with a dose of 0.25 mg injected subcutaneously once-weekly and follow the dose escalation schedule below to minimize gastrointestinal adverse reactions

    Week 1 to week  4: 0.25mg weekly
    Week 5 to week 8: 0.5mg weekly
    Week 9 to week 12: 1mg weekly
    Week 13 to week 16: 1.7mg weekly
    Week 17 onwards: 2.4mg weekly
